Who Doesn't enjoy Greek Myth?
I admit that I'm a Greek geek and I've always wanted to illustrate the Minotaur. So, with the prompting of a buddy over at CA, I got to it and made this a reality. I think that my take is faithful to the story in a way that is fresh and original even though he doesn't have horns. You see, in the myth, the queen of Minos was tricked into falling in love with a special white bull as punishment for the kings refusal to sacrifice the creature. The Queen , with the help of Daedalus, managed to copulate with this bull and consequently the Minotaur was born. Just thinking about it gives me the heebie Jeebies! I got to thinking more about this creature, his character and background as I wanted to illustrate more than simply a bull headed man thing that kills people. The minotaur would ONLY eat Humans and to sate his appetite, the king of Minos demanded tribute from the other Greek cities of I believe 7 men and women each year. So this thing was some kind of mutant cannibal! I envisioned him as a man mutant prince (He was the son of the queen after all), perhaps suffering from some kind of mental condition. Powerful yet, not especially in shape because he must be threatening yet he does not have to work for his meals. Imagine him wandering the labyrinth, gnawing bones, mad from confinement and disease, cruelly intelligent yet simple in his language. Now imagine being stuck down there with him. Can you Say Terrifying?!

Time to get your Nerd on!
For all of you D& D geeks out there I put together a redesign of one of my favorite monsters. The Beholder. Now traditionally, the beholder is a floating eye with a mouth and the stalks are on top of it's head. At least thats what I've read. But to me, the beholder was more of a floating eye with stalks all over its body forming wavy patterns and basically a creature that you CAN NOT sneak up on.

I put together a quick animation of the Eye stalk blasting a hapless adventurer.

At long last I am releasing a personal project of mine based off of the poplar R.E.Howard Character Solomon Kane.Just before my daughter was born a buddy of mine challenged me to do some comic panels based off of a story that I liked. Now life takes you on all kinds of ups and downs but I never forgot about the challenge and I always told myself that I would get back to it. So,this past year, I decided to stop mulling it over and start doing it for real.
Characteristically of me, I decided to take the challenge to the next level and not only story board the tale but also Concept Design the project, and I figured that it was a good way to revamp my portfolio in the process.

Over the past couple of months I have created story boards, an Animatic, Character Designs, Prop Weapon and Environment Concepts.
This project has been a lot of fun to do and I'm glad that I did it.

Paul Lasaine and Brush Creation Tutorial

This year I am going to post more. At least this is what I keep telling myself. Now, I have a ton of links and info bookmarked all over my computer but how often do I share them? Almost never. I just horde them and cackle to myself with triumph at their discovery. Cheesy, I know, but I am an art geek and proud of it. But, with the spirit of the new year, I will share.

Today, we have the art blog of Paul Lasaine. This guy is awesome! Go to one of his blogs and enjoy. He is an amazing concept artist / painter and most of you should recognize his work from the Lord of the Rings.

In particular, he put up a useful tutorial on how to make a custom brush in Photoshop. I like this tutorial because he both goes into depth on the technical end as well as in the practical application. Where Have I been?!

Sorry all for not posting. It's not that I haven't been busy, just the opposite and I'm only now getting around to posting a sample of what I've been working on.

In case you've noticed, my website is down for now as I am in the process of relaunching my brand so stay tuned for more info on that as well.

Enough with the chit chat, on to the work!

Firstly, I entered a couple of Ch0w contests on CA and here are the results:
The first one is a Soviet Space admiral. I rarely ever get to do Sci Fi and I had a lot of fun working on this one.

Yes I'm still at it. The good folks down at Atomic Overmind Press are still giving me work on characters for their RPG series " The Day After Ragnarok". I've been working on and off on this project for a couple of years now and I hope you will notice a progression in my work from Day one to today. I'm posting up a series of 10 characters that I completed for their extension modules.

Although it is true that I have been working mostly digital these days I do still draw in the old sketchbook albeit not as often as before. I went through a 3 month phase where I thought that I should only work digital period. Blah Blah Blah. Here is my latest installment of Riley Method Pen drawings inspired by Chris Legaspi's posts up on his blog Freshdesigner. I really enjoy doing these quick 5-10 minute portraits and I find it to be excellent warm up exercises . According to Stat Counter, people out there seem to be searching the term Riley Method and are taking a look at my images so I decided to put together another page for anyone out there who is interested.

These Images are simply more Ball Point Pen sketches from my Sketchbook. We have some figures and some portraits. The Portraits took me about 20 min or so each.

Pencil Studies from my sketchbook. Every once in a while I pick up a pencil to prove that I can still use one but for now my favorite drawing tool is the humble ball point pen. Call Me Crazy!

Lastly we have a scan of a page out of my sketchbook. This i'd say would be what a typical page looks like ( at least one that I'd be willing to share ).

Today I'm posting up another study but this time you get a process piece. This means you get to see an animation of the painting as it evolves from Sketch to finished piece. The original idea was for me to follow the step by step process on page 69 of "Practical Guide to Painting" by Vicenc B. Ballestar and Jordi Vigue. Well i got to about step 3 and decided to go off on my own tangent. However, once completed, I did adjust the levels to get that saturated gouache look that they were going for. All in all it was a fun exercise and I may do more in the future.

Hey All,

Finally, I buckled down and got myself a decent tablet. Prior to this I was using a Wacom Graphire 3 which has about as much pen sensitivity as a 2x4"! So far so good but it is taking some time to get the hang of it all. Today I'm posting some studies I did,mostly using the Charcoal Brush in Painter. I have not had any success in PS getting a nice feeling for drawing but I suspect that if i tinker some more and fiddle a bit with the brushes, I'll work it out.

You may notice several attempts by me at Drawing Field Marshal Montgomery with mixed success. I read the mans Autobiography and i can't help but respect the man despite his many flaws. In addition, he has a very unique and face with sharp yet " British" features and i've yet to completely " Capture" his likeness. Doubtless that there will be more Montgomery sketches to follow in the future. Perhaps someday, some one will refer to this as my " Montgomery Period" :)!

Hey Gang,

I know it has been a long time since I've made a post but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy. So, in the spirit of learning and growth, I've been working on my photo shop skills. Recently, I purchased " Master Art Works Metal Gear Solid 4" which basically is an awesome collection of production art and "making of" concept art for the video Game Metal Gear Solid 4. I'm sure all of you know that I am a Metal Gear fan right? Anyways, contained within this book are several examples of cell shading which I decided, I would emulate. The following image is the result of my efforts.

I spent most of my time simply playing around with camouflage patterns and I admit, I got a little carried away and created several " Variations" of this shooter character which you will find below.

I spent a lot of time digging around for various military camouflage patterns and I'd be a happy to share my resource files to anyone who is interested.
The following camo patterns you will find are. British DPM, British Desert DPM, German Flecktarn, US Woodland, CADPAT, Desert Tiger Stripe, Tiger Stripe, Urban, US 3 Color Desert and a couple of civilian pattens Mossy Oak and Real Tree. One that I am quite proud of is the Denison Smock pattern that was used by British Para Troopers during the 2nd World War. I've got quite a few more that I have not used as well.

Maybe in a follow up post, I'll include them all.

Calgary Comic Con 2010

Yes I know it has been awhile since my last posting but I am here to tell you that it was a success and Nick and I had a great time. Drop on by our blog to find out more.

For myself personally, I had an opportunity to meet ( albeit briefly) a personal Art Hero of min IAIN McCAIG! Wow what a great guy! He is every bit as sincere in real life as he is in his interviews and DVD's. I had attempted to meet him twice before but on both occasions he was backed up with lines of his fans and i was amazed to see him take the time to speak with each and every one of them and ask them questions about their show or the costumes or their art. He was doing sketches for people and he certainly wen above and beyond for them too. Most of the Guys I saw hacking out drawings at the show would do a quick torso or hero pose and then charge you an arm and a leg. I saw him complete full pencil illustrations for guys and he was not gouging fans either! So anyways, I had a booth to run and I could not keep leaving Nick alone so I basically had given up the hope of meeting him. The show ended and Nick and I had packed up and disassembled the booth when on the way out I spotted Iain McCaig was still at his table talking to fans and being a friendly guy. ( most of the guests had taken off at about 3pm and he was still there at 5:45!) So, i took my opportunity and he was gracious enough to chat with me for a few minutes. He Said that he would be coming to the show again next year and that he would be doing a demo over at ACAD sometime this year so who knows. Next time I'll try to talk to him a Little further but WOW, what a great guy and I'm very glad that i got to meet him.

I brought in one of my Gnomon DVD's that he had produced for him to sing and here she is... VOILA!

So I've been looking at the stats for my site and it's great to see the amount of traffic that I am getting as well as to see which pieces of mine are most popular. It seems that you folks out there really are enjoying the Dragonlance images. That's great and I'm mildly surprised that the DL franchise is still going strong. I first read the Chronicles in the late 80's ( i know, i'm old!) and I loved the books then and I still love them now. Although, that recent animated feature was God Awful!

Sorry gang for not posting last month. I guess I just got behind the 8 ball with life and forgot to post up something. I have been focusing mostly on Inking lately and wrapped up a couple of jobbies from earlier sketches. Although, I'm not sure if inking them was much of an improvement. I have this problem where I just like my sketches too much and something gets lost in the process of inking. I try to combat that by inking with " Panache". Ie bold strokes. You can be the judge to see if I have been successful. I'll be taking some time off mid month and I hope to post more and even include some colored works too!

Well Now. At least I have been (barely) maintaining my one post a month commitment. For this month I have a Metal Gear image and some Character Designs that I did for a local Prop Shop Studio Y Creations for their annual IAAPA booth.

My assignment was to design two characters for an intergalactic poker tournament. I drew the "Sexy Chick" and the " Melting Robot". Each image I'm posting is a summary of the designs evolution from thumbnail sketch to a finished turnaround. The project itself was an interesting collaborative and good experience for me. I had to learn and tailor my designs around the constraints of the materials that we could use. The process was for the design to be first modeled in Z brush and then sculpted out of primarily foam. The robot it self was intended to be 12.5 feet tall when completed. The last I heard, this concept has been scrapped and these designs may never be realized. Oh well, at least they can live on here on my blog. The Designs are posted WITH PERMISSION received by David Nolan of Studio Y Creations.

1st: Metal Gear. Because I just can't get enough. Here is our hero having a romantic moment!

2: "Sexy Chick"
This was a fun one to do but it was one of those assignments where I had to swallow my tongue and do what the client wanted even though it did not appeal to my own personal aesthetics. In the end, the character wound up being a skinny caricature of Angelina Jolie with a leather suit and a skullcap.

#3. "Melting Robot":

This character was a challenge because he was in fact two characters in one and he was a mechanical object. I think I proved to myself that I can draw mechanical things with this one and I grew fond of the fishy alien driver.

More sketches and an Art Challenge!

Just to show that I'm not just sitting back on my laurels. Here are a couple of images for you.

This first one is from an Art challenge issued by N8B over at Maxcellent. The idea was / is to push each other to do something new and grow/ improve as artists. So, this one is a Conan piece. The gimmick here was to get me to draw action on horse back. I think I squeezed a touch of foreshortening into this one but not enough to satisfy ol Nate. I intend on Inking this in my " old school" style.

Now because I just am a glutton for punishment, i just can't kick the Metal Gear itch. No matter how hard I try. So, here we go with another round of MGS3 related works. We got an inked piece of col. Volgin.

and.... We got a rough sketch of Ocelot juggling his revolvers. I'm fond of this one in particular.

AND... a couple of head shots of my favorite hero / anti hero BIG BOSS.

The job was to illustrate 11 characters for the game manual. The project was a ton of fun and I look forward to working on more projects in this genre in the future.

Calgary Comic Con 2009

Well, I came, I saw, and I saw it again. Yessir one more comic con down and it was a good time for all. It was much busier than last year and after waiting almost an hour to gain entry, I had a good afternoon getting my geek on.
At the con I had a couple of co-workers whose booths I loitered at such as what you see in the scene below of Nick and I at the fabulous NateB's table.

In case you are wondering, I'm the one in the middle.

Last year I missed out on an opportunity to meet one of my living art hero's Bruce Timm so I went down determined to remedy that this year. And.... I had zero luck!

The man is difficult to track down. ( I'll give you the Coles Notes version as this whole saga took all day to unfold) I got to see him from 4 ft out and I talked to his assistant but still no Bruce Timm. I had wanted to get a con sketch from him but I was SOL about 5 minutes after he showed up ( He's a very popular Artist). Lucky for me I have an insider. Nate was kind enough to sign up for me first thing on Sunday morning and now at long last, I have my very own Bruce Timm Conan sketch! Woot Woot!

Feast your eyes on this beauty! It will be framed and hold aplace of honor on my wall.

So, after all that eyes candy and creative energy, this was the best that I could come up with in my sketch book. Lots of head sketches.

Here are some more miscellanous sketches from the Ol sketchbook. I've been super busy lately as things have been picking up! Once I get the go ahead from certain parties I'll be posting up the work from the projects that I have been working on. In the meantime, here are some sketchbook excepts.

Tony Stark: N8B! over at Maxcellent challenged me to draw some Iron man and reluctantly, I took up the gauntlet. I've never even attempted to draw the character in my life so this was a learning curve. I prefer the old school suit better than the new school Adi Gravnov look. ( Besides, who can compete with Gravnov? I'm still waiting on your version NATE!!!

I am a big fan of the Robert E howard character Solomon Kane and this image is me taking a stab at a character design for him sans coat/ cloak. I think my version is pretty much based off of Gary Gianni's interpretation with a few twist's here and there. I was inpired to do this for two reasons. 1: i cannot stand the character design used in the new Dark horse comic books. They make him look like a Dark elf with a hat. Swords on his back?! Sheesh... 2: I'll tell you about that one later.

what we have here today are select pages from my sketchbook. I had to retire my last one after Christmas and I bought this cheap Super Deluxe Aqua Bee thing and it is terrible to draw in. TERRIBLE! But, I'm not one to waste so I'm slogging through it with determination.

Thanks for stopping by even though I have not been the most attentive to keeping this blog updated. Currently I am considering Re-vamping the look of this blog so who knows what this place will look like in a few months. Stay tuned as I plan on posting some more sketches within the next couple of days.

DragonLance and Fantasy

In an effort to round out my portfolio I drew a few " Old School" Dragon Lance and D&D images.

The first one is from one of my favorite DL Modules # 6 Dragons of Ice. No one has ever written a story that does justice to this part of the DL saga. I always enjoyed it and it was a chance to draw all of my favorite characters.

The following are two Marko Durjdevic inspired character designs. This guy is the Dragon highlord Feal-Thas who I feel never got the exposure he deserved.

Here is one for the Major character Laurana.

This last one is my version of a Beholder. I know it does not conform with the present depictions of these beasts but this is how I always envisioned them and so that's how I'm going to draw em!

Story Boards #2

A friend of mine showed me some story boards from a project that he had worked on and he asked me if I could do storyboards? Well, I decided to take his boards and re-do them my way. I have taken a little bit of creative liscense with some of the camera angles and shots but basically, it's a shot for shot remake. No markers this time, just tonal work using pencils.

I did it not as a money maker but as an excercise because I have not done any storyboard work in years. It is executed in Marker on paper.

Here are some process images for a Metal Gear Solid 3 "Snake EATER" Cover that I have been working on for a while now.
What we have here are the finished pencils, marker comps and the final Gouache painting.

It's been slow it seems but here are a few pages out of the Ol Sketchbook. Most of them are executed with a Bic Pen while house sitting a couple of weeks ago.

Time to add some more images from the last week or so. I'm trying to sketch for at least an hour everyday and some of these pages are the results. Also we have some gouache studies and Ink studies.
